What do you need to dive Silfra?

An Open Water certification and a dry suit qualification, or 10 dry suit dives in the last two years.

  • Dry suit

The park requires a qualification, or at least 10 dry suit dives in the last two years. It does not allow diving in a wetsuit.

  • Depth

    18 m at most. Dive.is says a dive averages 7 to 12 m.

  • Never alone

The park forbids diving alone and cave diving. A cave beside the entrance reaches at least 63 m, says Dive.is, and it is off limits.

  • Age

From 17 at Dive.is and from 18 at Arctic Adventures.

  • Your risk

The park says divers go at their own responsibility and risk, and that all dives must be registered.

What will you see on a Silfra dive?

Three deep sections, then a shallow lagoon.

Two divers in dry suits between the rock walls of Silfra, June 2014.

Dive.is divides Silfra into Big Crack, Hall, Cathedral and Lagoon. Wikipedia describes the Cathedral as about 100 m long, with visibility almost from end to end.

Operators advertise visibility of 100 m, and Arctic Adventures up to 150 m. We found no official measurement. Dive.is gives the water as 2 to 4 °C all year.

Is diving Silfra worth it?

That's for you to weigh: from €246 for about 45 minutes in very cold water, at most 18 m down.

Can you dive without a dry suit certificate?

Yes, with proof of at least 10 dry suit dives in the last two years. Without either, you can snorkel instead.
